Literary Archetypes

Hero-Gilgamesh-Gilgamesh is the hero in this story. He is the king of Uruk and is also part God. He thinks he will become more powerful by killing Humbaba. He tries to find immortality so that he will live forever. He believes that he will get immortal life for Enkidu. I think Gilgamesh is a powerful strong leader.
Antihero- I also think that in a way Gilgamesh is the antihero. He is very commited to killing Humbaba until he gets there and realizes what could happen if they didnt succeed against Humbaba. Enkidu had to take on Humbaba by himself for a couple of minutes because Gilgamesh was in a daze because he was amazed at the size of the power and size of Humbaba. Also he lost faith in himself when Utnapisutim told him that he could not help because he doesnt think its good to be immortal.
The wise fool- Utnapisutim-Before the flood Utnapishtim was a normal man he didnt care about immortal life. He becomes immortal anyway and lives off with only his wife. He knows that everyone wants what he has because he has immortal life and people want to know how to also become immortal. People dont realize that they will have to travel a long way to reach him and alot of people dont know this about him in the first place. I think he was wise by living far away from everyone because than everyone would want his powers.
The Devil figure- Ishtar- She did alot of mean terrible things during the story. One of the worst things that I think she did was when she sent the Bull Of Heaven to kill 300 men and Gilgamesh. She does whatever she wants she sent the Bull because Gilgamesh wouldn't marry her. She is also a contributer to the great flood and she wants to wipe out mankind because she believes shes better and she wants to put them in there positions.
The Outcast- Enkidu- Enkidu is the outcast because before Gilgasmesh sent the Prostitute to sleep with him he was Half man/Half animal. The reason they have the Prostitue sleep with Enkidu is becaues they want him to become a man because he frees the hunter’s animals from the traps, and this makes the hunter want Enkidu to just stop this behavior and become a man so that he will stop doing this. So sleeping with the Prostitue will make him stop. The town of Uruk also thinks hes an outcast because he acts like a animal and doensnt fit in very well.
The Double- Immortality- I think that immortality can go both ways good and bad. You get to live forever and you also get to see everything in the world. Gilgamesh especially wanted to be immortal because if he was immortal him and Enkidu could always be together. Gilgamesh is forced to be immortal because of his godness. Usually when your forced to do something for example work you dont usually like it. Now that Enkidu was killed he was alone and wanted to die but he couldnt.
The Scapegoat- Enkidu- After Gilgamesh and Enkidu killed Humbaba the gods say that one of them have to die. Since Gilgamesh was a god and has immortal life they turn to Enkidu. Enkidu has killed Humbaba and the Bull of Heaven and has no god power and is not immortal he is obviously the one who has to grab the sharp end of the stick and die.
The teptress- Prostitute- The prostitue is very beautiful and not alot of people can resist her. Everyone thinks that she is amazing. Once you get past the beauty of the Prostitue you realize that she is the destroyer. She slept with Enkidu and now the animals think he is a coward and she knew this would happen but she didn't care. She set up Enkidu's death.
The good mother- Ninson- Ninsun is Gilgamesh's mother and she is the good mother that gives her kid advice when he need it. She realizes how much Gilgamesh likes Enkidu and adopts him although he is half animal. She is very nice to everyone and is definley the good mother
