act 5
When Hamlet returns he is just in time for Ophelia's funeral. He doesn't know who has died though. It wasn't completely a proper burial because they thought Ophelia had committed suicide. Laertes jumped down in the grave and held his sister for one last time, and when Hamlet notices who has died, he also jumps into the grave. The two start fighting and Hamlet says all of the things he would do for Ophelia. They were pulled apart, and Claudius calmed Laertes down by reminding him of the plan. Hamlet told Horatio that he replaced the letter sent by Claudius to kill Hamlet for one that said to kill the two men carrying the letter. Later a messenger comes to tell Hamlet that the king and queen are expecting him to duel with Laertes in a fencing match. Than both Hamlet and his mother die and Hamlet explains to fortinbras to be the king of denmark.
Act 4
Claudius told hamlet that he must leave for England as soon as possible and Hamlet agreed. Claudius didn't tell Hamlet, but his intentions were for him to be put to death there. On their way to board a ship for England, Hamlet encounters Fortinbras. Hamlet learns that a war is going on because of something insignificant. Soon Laertes sails back from France with some angry people. He wants revenge for his dead father also (Polonius). Later, Horation gets a letter from Hamlet saying his ship has been captured by pirates who returned him to Denmark. He also has messages for the king and queen, and something has happened to the 2 "friends" that took him on the ship to England. The message for Claudius was that Hamlet would be back the next day. Laertes is happy because he can get revenge on the person who killed his father. Claudius is devising a plan so that Laertes can kill Hamlet without foul play. He wants them to fight with swords in a duel. Laertes will use a sharpened sword and might put poison on the blade, and if Laertes loses, Claudius will offer him a cup of wine with poison. Gertrude comes in and announces that Ophelia has drown in the river.
Act 3
The friends tell King Claudius and Gertrude that they can't find out why Hamlet is still sad/mad. They did tell them that he is excited for the players, so Claudius and Gertrude decide to watch. Polonius and Claudius follow Ophelia and then they hide when she meets Hamlet. He was talking to himself about suicide before he met her. They had an arguement, and Hamlet claimed to have loved her and not to. He was angry at her, and everyone else. Polonius and Claudius decide that love isn't what is driving Hamlet insane. They are not sure what it is, but it could end up causing harm. After the play they determine that Claudius is the murderer.

Act 2
In the beginning of act 2 the King Claudious and Gertrude were inviting all of Hamlets friends to him because they wanted to cheer him up because he was still morning of the death of his father. Gertrude was trying to explain to Hamlets friends that he has changed since he found out that his dad has died. The friends tell the King about his love and poems for Ophelia. They devise a plan to hide when they meet up to see if he really is in love with her. Hamlet meets the friends that the King asked for. At first they wouldn't tell Hamlet why they were visiting him and than they told him that they were sent by the king. They are now making a play and to try to reenact the death of king Hamlet to see if Claudia was guilty of murder.
act one
At the beggining of the act the 2 guards thought that they saw a ghost of the dead hamlet. King Claudius gave a speech about him marrying Gertrude, his brother in law's widow and the mother of Prince Hamlet. Denmark is said over the death of their former king, but Claudius is hoping this will end the mourning. The king got a letter from Fortinbras who wants him to give up the land King Hamlet won from Fortinbras father. Prince Hamlet is so sad about his father's death that he is considering suicide. He is also angry about the quick marriage of his mother and King Claudius. Leartes is going to leave, but before he does he tells Ophelia not to fall in love with Hamlet because he can't marry her or lover her honorably. Polonius tells his son Laertes to hurry to leave, but gives him advice before he went.

BEOWULF Unit Test = 200 points
Answer the following questions in complete paragraphs; be sure to include examples for each question and quotations as indicated with appropriate citation after each quotation. You will need nine quotations.
Ex. “I ended his reign, avenged his crime” (Raffel 84).
You must have a Work Cited – 10 points (see Unit Plan).
1. Literary scholars contend that Beowulf is the quintessential good vs. evil story. Explain how the poem depicts good vs. evil by citing at least three examples. You must have three quotations (one for each example); also, make sure your “argument” is clearly written and supported by evidence from the story. 60 points
Beowulf Vs Grendel
Grendel is a very mean vicious character he kills innocent people and it has sent the king of Danes ,Hrothgar, to call Beowulf who is strong and heroic and can also kill Grendel so the people of Danes don't have to worry anymore. Beowulf is very brave and very very committed in doing his duties in which he is asked. In my opinion I think that Beowulf knows that he can win the fight vs Grendel I also believe Grendel believes that he would lose to Beowulf because when Grendel first saw Beowulf his first instinct was to run. "Grendel's one thought was to run from Beowulf, flee back to his marsh and hide there." (pg 34) This shows that Grendel is frighted by Beowulf. When Beowulf and Grendel were fighting Beowulf went right after his arm and started tugging on it. Grendel was shocked with how much power Beowulf had inside of his little body compared to himself. Beowulf was determined to kill this monster and kept going away at his arm. After a couple pulls Beowulf ripped Grendel arm right out of his socket. "The victory, for the proof, hanging high from the rafters where Beowulf had hung it, was the monster's Arm, claw, and shoulder and all." (pg 37) The townspeople were happy they didn't have to worry about Grendel anymore.
Beowulf Vs Grendel's Mother
After Beowulf killed Grendel his Mom wanted revenge on Beowulf. She travels to Herot and kills one of the kings right hand man named Aeschere. She retreated in a magical place where she keeps her lair. The water burns and the bottom of the lake has never been reached. Still Beowulf is determined to go down their and kill her. On the way to the lake Beowulf and his soldiers discover Aeshere's head on the ground this just makes Beowulf angrier. While Beowulf is fighting Grendel's mother he finds a sword on one of the walls where she stays. " Then he saw, hanging on the wall, a heavy Sword, hammered by giants, strong and blessed with their magic, the best of all weapons but so massive that no ordinary man could lift its carved and decorated length. He drew it from its scabbard, broke the chain on its hilt, and then, savage, now, angry and desperate, lifted it high over his head an struck with all the strength he had left, caught her in the neck and cut it through, broke bones and all. Her body fell to the floor, lifeless, the sword was wet with her blood, and Beowulf rejoiced at the sight." (pg 68) He decapitates her head and he killed both Grendel and his Mom with no problem. The towns suffering is over and Beowulf is the hero of Danes.
Beowulf vs Dragon
Beowulf is now a little bit older but he still wont back down from a challenge. The Dragon has been guarding treasure under the earth for 300 years. A thief stole a Covered Goblet from the dragon and he is blowing fire and burning down townspeople houses and belongings until he finds it. His next target is Beowulf's house. He comes to Beowulf's house at night blows fire onto his house and it burns to the ground. Beowulf doesn't understand why he deserves this so he gets his men together and set out to kill the dragon that did this to his home. They go to the Dragons hole he comes out and Beowulf tried to take a strike at him. He realizes that he has lost a lot of strength because of his aging and could hardly but the scales off the Dragon. Once the men saw this they ran away because they knew if Beowulf couldn't defeat the creature they couldn't possibly do anything to harm it. Beowulf took another swing at the creature. It snapped the sword into two pieces and the dragon took a chunk of skin out of Beowulf's neck. He stabbed the dragon in the flank. It was a fatal blow. Beowulf then realized that the dragons was venomous and that he is dying. " Our lord s dead, leader of the people the dragon killed him, but the beast is dead, too cut in half by a dagger; Beowulf's enemy sleeps in its blood. No sword could pierce its skin, wound that monster. Wiglaf is sitting in mourning close to Beowulf's body." Beowulf told Wiglaf. (Pg 118) Beowulf asks Wiglaf to gather treasure from the cave so that he may die with it. He also tells Wiglaf to bring gold and treasure to his people. Beowulf is buried and then buried with the treasure. He died in glory and thats exactly how he wanted it to be he died because he was doing something that he loved and that was to fight.
2. How would you describe Beowulf’s attitude toward life – his beliefs and values? You must have two quotations cited correctly to support your opinion. 40 points
I believe that Beowulf believes that if he dies in honor he will be fine with dieing. For example in the movie Forrest Gump when Forrest went to the war in Vietnam his lieutenant Dan Taylor wanted to die if he was in battle because thats how he thought he had to die because his ancestors died that way. In a way Lt. Dan reminds me of Beowulf. They both are very brave and put other people before themselves. Beowulf has to fight Grendel and he is excited to do it because he wants to show the townspeople that he can defeat a big monster like he did the 9 sea monster when he was swimming against Brecca for 5 days. "This bloody battle, stand when the fighting is done. No one else could do what i mean to here no man but me could hope to defeat this monster."(pg 104) Beowulf is relentless he believes if there is a challenge he has to take because he I think that Beowulf thinks that he has to prove to all the people that he is strong and can defeat anyone or anything. “They said that of all the kings upon the earth he was the man most gracious and fair-minded, kindest to his people and keenest to win fame.” pg (76) This quote shows that people know that Beowulf was the hero and always will be although the dragon killed him with the venmous bite to the neck.
3.Is Beowulf a braggart or is he honest? Is he guilty of hubris? State your opinion and support with specific examples and one quotation cited correctly. 30 points
I think that if your really good at something than you can brag and Beowulf was a true leader and hero so he had rights to show off himself and prove himself to the creatures that he defeated. "Grendel is no braver, no stronger, than i am! i could kill him with my sword; i shall note easy as it would be. this fiend is a bold and famous fighter, but his claws and teeth scratching at my shield , his clumsy fists beating at my sword blade, would be helpless. i will meet him with my hands empty--unless his heart fails him." (pg. 31-32) This quote shows his confidence before he fights someone. Beowulf knows that he will succeed before he even begins to fight. When Herot asked Beowulf to come and take care of Grendel he was afraid to do it and was glad to travel across seas so he could take care of Grendel. Both Grendel and Beowulf were confident going into there fight. Once Beowulf got a hold of Grendel's arm he knew that he was in trouble. Grendel's confidence was brought way down. Than Beowulf tore his arm off and took it back to the town to prove to the people that he defeated Grendel. I think that he took his arm off and showed it to the people because he wanted to brag that he defeated the impossible, the vicious Grendel."The victory, for the proof, hanging high from the rafters where Beowulf had hung it, was the monster's Arm, claw, and shoulder and all." (pg 37) I think that Beowulf likes taking these big risk when he fights these monsters because when he succeeds he can take more credit and brag a little more. Overall Beowulf has a lot of self cofidence and he also likes taking the credit in what he accomplishes.
4. Choose three themes from Beowulf besides good vs. evil. Explain how they are implicated in the poem using at least one quotation for each theme. 60 points
The three themes that I will be using are going to be leadership loyalty and courageous.
Beowulf shows a lot of leadership. Hrothgar asks him to travel across seas to come fight Grendel so the people of Danes don't have to worry anymore." The danes shook with terror. Down the aisles the battle swept, angry and wild. Herot trembled, wonderfully built to withstand teh blows the struggling great bodies beating at its beautiful walls."(pg 34-35) This is an example of how the people of Danes feel with out Beowulf and his army protecting them. He leads his army wherever they go and he wont back down even though he sees that his men are dying and cannot defeat Grendel. For example when Grendel was killing the people in the Herot Beowulf saw at least 20 people get shredded apart by Grendel's giant hands and sharp claws but he still lead the way for his army and they defeated the giant monster. Overall Beowulf has great leadership skills and will lead his army no matter what the consequences.
The next theme I'm going to do is loyalty. Beowulf does stuff for his country that most people in the world would'nt dare to do. When he is asked to kill Grendel he didn't hesiatate at all he accepted his challenge and didn't care about the consequences. He fights for people that he doesn't know becuase he wants to make sure that everyone is safe and sound. He doesnt want anyone to frieght and when hes there protecting them noone is scared. When Beowulf defeated Grendel and his mom he had no problem because he was young and strong. Than he moved on to the dragon and he was old and weaker than before. He was struggling killing the Dragon so everyone got scared and ran away. They knew that if Beowulf couldnt do it they couldnt either. Wiglaf stayed with Beowulf through his death and that shows that Wiglaf was loyal to his leader and always would be. " The monster came quickly towards him, pouring out fire and smoke, hurrying to its fate. Flames beat at the iron shield, and for a time it held, protected Beowulf as he'd planned; then it began to melt, and for the first time in his life that famous prince fought with fate against him, with glory denied him. He knew it, but he raised his sword and struck at the dragons scaly hide. The ancient Blade broke, bit into the monster's skin, drew blood, but cracked and failed him before it went deep enough helped him less then needed." (pg 105) This is my example when Beowulf risked is life for the town because he was very loyal to them.
My last theme is courageous. During the book and the movie Beowulf was courageous. It takes alot of courage not to back down from a fight that your asked to know matter how big or powerful your oppoent is. Beowulf didnt care he was the braves most courageous man of his time. Also age didnt matter to Beowulf he fighted Grendel and destoryed him when he was young. When Beowulf was old he struggled against the Dragon and the Dragon took his life. Beowulf still put up a fight and tried as hard as a man could. "And now the youth was to enter the line of ... battle with his lord, his first time to be tested as a fighter. His spirit did not break and the ancestral blade would keep its edge, as the dragon discovered 8as soon as they came together in the combat. "(pg. 107-108) The battle with the Dragon was Beowulfs last courageous deed but for Wiglaf it was only his first test. Unlike all the other great warriors that ran Wiglaf stayed with Beowulf because he also has a lot of courage. Overall Beowulf is the most courageous person in this book and was born a warrior and died like one in glory.
